Source Address Types

The system allows you to specify different originators using the Source Address Type of Number (TON) ST option of the HTTP SMS request.

Using the ST option you can change the type of source address (SA), which you must specify for each message, to be:

  • International Numeric (e.g. 44789733550) (TON = 1)
  • National Numeric (e.g. 0789735533) (TON = 0)
  • Alpha Numeric (e.g. AcmeSMS) (TON = 5)

International numeric numbers are up to 16 digits long (you can also see the article on International number formatting) and alphanumeric originators can be 11 characters long. Please note due to how the system parses information any : (colon) characters in an alphanumeric originator will be changed to ; (semicolon) characters.

We always suggest that customers who may be experiencing problems with TON 0 try using TON 5 instead.

For more information please consult the HTTP SMS Specification Document article or the International Number Formatting article.
